After 20 years as Realwheels Theatre, we’re excited to share our evolution: Welcome to Glitch Theatre: Different by Design.

We’re embracing a name that captures the moment of transformation: creating works that challenge expectation, spark innovation, and invite new perspectives. 

Why “Glitch”?

For us, the “Glitch” is where artistry meets accessibility. It’s where D/disability-identified artists take the things that make the world work against them – against us – and turn those things into engines of creativity, innovation, and ingenious life.

As a digital metaphor, ‘glitch’ challenges rigid societal norms around ability and embodiment, signaling that our company doesn’t simply operate within existing systems — it questions, rewires, and remixes them. By embracing what is traditionally seen as a flaw, Glitch Theatre becomes an act of redefinition, transforming perceived error into a vibrant source of artistic possibility.

Over two decades, Realwheels Theatre has been built by incredible leadership, groundbreaking performances, and unwavering support from our community. From artists who’ve graced our stages to audiences who’ve championed our work, from funders who’ve believed in our vision to collaborators who’ve pushed boundaries alongside us — thank you for making Realwheels a force for change in contemporary theatre.

Why We’re Evolving

As we’ve grown, so has our understanding of what’s possible. We’re changing our name to broaden and expand the notion of D/disability beyond physical disabilities, to create a more inviting company that welcomes the full spectrum of D/disability experience, and to continue innovating and pushing the boundaries of performance and accessibility. This evolution reflects our commitment to being a home for all D/disability-identified artists.

What This Means

Our work remains D/disability-led: not defined by disability, but shaped by it. Every Glitch project is a fusion of artistry and authenticity. Every access need—even the friction between them—is an offer of creative potential in an environment rarely built with us in mind.
