Playwriting Circle

Applications are now open for the Playwriting Circle 2026!

Deadline to submit is August 28, 2026.

Now in its eighth year, the Playwriting Circle brings together a cohort of new and emerging Vancouver-based playwrights (or writers who would like to transition into playwriting) who identify with D/disability. Selected applicants will engage in a ten-week workshop process, receiving mentorship from established playwrights along with peer support and feedback.

This process culminates in Gain Staging — a professional podcast recording of each playwright’s work. Each episode of the podcast will feature an interview with the playwright alongside an excerpt of their work as performed by a cast of experienced actors. The episodes will be released in early 2027.

This program offers two streams — Circle 1 & Circle 2.

CIRCLE 1 offers an introductory approach to playwriting, with a focus on developing single scenes or excerpts from potentially larger projects. Selected applicants will explore story, dramatic action, character, dialogue, and other fundamental elements of playwriting. Facilitated by Elio Zarrillo.

CIRCLE 2 is for playwrights who are further along in their writing practice and wish to develop full-length plays. Facilitated by Adam Grant Warren.

Here is what our past Playwriting Circle Participants had to say!

Emily Brook: “I discovered that as long as you focus, trust the process and whoever your partner is at any given moment you can’t really lose.”

Emma Kivisild: “I love working with other artists with disabilities, and presenting the realities of our lives.”

Sam MacPhee-Pitcher: “Hearing the works of others and imagining the staging potential is one of the greatest joys of each session.”

Alex Masse:  “One thing I’ve really come to admire is the sheer scale that theatre allows. All of these stories, wherever they are, however “big” or “small” their scale may seem, can be told enchantingly through theatre.”

Gaitrie Persaud: “I enjoyed analyzing the script and listening to amazing writers’ perspectives and feedback.”

Seeley Quest: “I’d love to connect with potential performers and production team people interested in working together to move modeling toward staging.”

Fiona Smith: “I love hearing/seeing/experiencing the development of my colleague’s scripts each week – there is some cool stuff happening in this group!”

Jennifer Strong: “This class has provided a wonderful platform from which to explore playwriting.”
